Middle School Track Meets

You are receiving this email because I believe, based on the information I have, that your child is in middle school. If I should remove you from the list, let me know.

We have two special Middle School meets coming up--May 31 at Amherst Middle School and June 2 at the Massachusetts Middle School championship. I had hoped we would be invited to the Bement Invitational (put on by a private school in Deerfield) on May 19, but we have not.

Track and Cross Country are increasingly becoming middle school sports in western Massachusetts, matching a trend that has been underway in eastern Massachusetts for some time. This provides opportunities not open to our elementary school students.

The May 31 meet at Amherst is on a Thursday, and I have convinced Parks and Rec to provide a bus after school to get us up to Amherst for 4 pm. The bus will bring us back. This meet should be great fun as it will give the kids a feel for how their high school teams will go to meets and compete. At this meet, we will field relay teams for the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m. We will select the relay members by taking the kids with the best times in the 100 and 400. We will practice hand-offs in practice.

I have already posted information about the Massachusetts Middle School Track Championship on June 2 on the website. There are qualifying standards for this meet. Although there is a link to the standards on the website, I am also attaching the standards to this email. Although it does not appear that they are asking for proof of reaching the standards in order to register for the meet, I think it is advisable for athletes to be able to run, through, or jump to the standard by the time of the meet because the competition will be keen. Have your kids take a look at the standards as they continue to improve. I will be sending information about signing up for this meet in a couple of weeks.
